Slashdot post on "Britain's First Jedi Member of Parliament"

It's just so entertaining. If you're not familiar, Jedi is a legal religion in Britain!
earthlingpink writes "In his maiden speech to the House of Commons, the Hon. Member for Copeland, Jamie Reed MP, announced that he is a Jedi: "as the first Jedi Member of this place, I look forward to the protection under the law that will be provided to me by the Bill" (the quotation is a fair way down the page; search for 'Jedi,' not surprisingly).

Haven't blogged in a while

I've been so busy with Snort, BASE, Ethereal... Security interests, in general. Check out these products, real good stuff.

Cygwin's SSH problems on Windows

I've run it on at least two completely separate Windows XP installs on one machine, and now on my new machine, and still get this suspicious problem. If I reboot the PC, the ssh service starts, but immediately disconnects ssh sessions. I restart the service, and voila, problem solved. I've googled and checked the Cygwin site, but no answers. I did find a similar problem on google, but no answer. Hrmph...

MS Virtual PC vs. MS Virtual Server

This is a nice article describing the similarities and differences between Virtual PC and Virtual Server. It should be interesting to anyone who uses either product. Going from Virtual PC to the Server product can be a bit shocking based solely on the interface, so it's nice to see what the real differences are.

Fedora Core 4 Test 2, too frustrating

Well, it wasn't Fedora that was to blame. I just couldn't hang in there with having to restart in Windows to play games, connect to work (short story: the Cisco VPN client for Linux is imperfect) etc. I'll still be running Linux, and probably Fedora, but not as my primary OS. I'll be giving up a stable SSH service and speed. The speed loss is due to XP 64 bit being more hassle for drivers than Linux at this point, so back to a 32 bit OS. :(

AMD64, Linux and Windows

I have an ASUS nForce3 motherboard with an AMD64 processor. The problems with AMD64 architecture my motherboard are different for Windows XP, Windows XP 64 bit, and Linux 64 bit (Fedora Core 4 test 2) Fedora Core doesn't seem to support my SATA RAID and with 64 bit linux, lot's of little things, like a 64 bit flash plugin for 64 bit firefox are missing. Windows XP 64 bit version doesn't have many of the drivers that are available for the standard 32 bit edition, like video and, again, RAID. Windows XP pro (32 bit) is perfect! Well, except that it's a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit architecture.

AIDE is also in Fedora Extras!

Another nice surprise. I was having issues getting the CVS snapshot to compile on FC4 test 1 (amd64) This just made it easier. See my earlier posts on Fedora Extras and AIDE for links. Sorry, I'm being lazy!

"Gnome-blog" for posting to Blogger

"Gnome-Blog" for posting to Blogger

I was very happy to find Gnome-Blog in Fedora Extras It doesn't appear to have a preview to have a look at what you're about to post, but I'll have to play with it for a while.

Excellent PVR and HTPC Article over at www.2cpu.com

I've decided to build my own "Tivo" so was very happy to come across this article. I was already going to go with MythTV due to the feature set. There is the big bonus of Linux and MythTV being free. This excellent article is very long and very informative, to the point of bordering on training. Just imagine an MP3 archive, a DVD archive, an RSS reader, web browsing, weather forecasts PLUS Tivo in a box, with no Tivo service fee's!

My AIDE and Cygwin saga continued

I've now gotten AIDE running on a second Windows/Cygwin system, still in a testing phase. I still have the "baseline" database and config file local, for simplicity of testing the basics and getting some experience in. It's a nice, simple solution. I've added the package "email" to my Cygwin install, and created an AIDE check script that will email the results. It'll be nice to hand over a simple, easy to understand package to our operations group.
