My last post got me thinking. I blog the same way I write documentation for systems I build. I assume the reader knows nothing (a close mark when writing to myself) and I tend to get good results because the doc includes more bits that would normally be assumed. When you read an old doc, sometimes your perspective has changed and the assumptions left out are now important for context, or even forgotten facts. So, writing myself articles as a way of saving solutions, hints and details is probably going to be a nice archive over time.

My own recommendation, and I couldn't find it on
addons.mozilla.com Turns out there's a good reason. Google suggest extension is on google at
google suggest. Makes sense, no? Actually, why google wouldn't list their Firefox extension with the Firefox site is beyond me. Whatever. I'll be able to find it now that I blogged it. Oddly, the only reason this blog is here is for me to keep notes, just a funny format. I write "articles" for myself.

Here are my current Firefox extensions. Some have been removed, like fasterfox and greasemonkey (good concept, no use for me) Some have been added, like IETab and Google Completion. Get'em at
addons.mozilla.org

I struggled for a while getting Windows style SMB shares working. Turns out you need to enable the user in Ubuntu, which can be done using "sudo smbpasswd -L -e username." Then the magic happened and using shares was as easy as it was supposed to be.

So far, Flock .5pre appears pretty nice. Just about 20 minutes of use, but already interesting. This post is created using the "blog" button. My del.icio.us account was setup as my favorites, and sync'd in seconds. I need to see if I can a button added in the toolbar for my favorite darned FireFox extension, switchproxy. Something for the morning. This blog posting tool appears nice and is WYSIWYG. More later? Who cares. Only I read this blog.

I tried and tried to move from Windows on an "always on" box. It's the only thing I used to keep up all of the time. Used to, because I can't get it to work. I tried moving from Windows to Linux (
Ubuntu) and found that Linux support for D-Link DWL-650 cards is still sparse due to D-Links policy of not giving up their API's or providing drivers, plus, there are like 6 different cards called the DWL-650. Not variations, different mfg chipsets. I eventually gave up getting the Linux drivers to work. I'd even tried NDISWrapper and using XP drivers.

I have installed on an old laptop and a VM now. So far, I have had an issue installing a D-Link DWL650 wireless card (no surprise, there - Thanks D-Link! You suck toasted golfballs.) and getting
tor installed. The fix for Tor was adding "universe" to /etc/apt/sources.list after "main restricted" If you don't know what I mean by that, maybe you're in too deep? Or, just google it and hack at it.

Go to view and add the bookmarks toolbar. Get a
de.lici.ous account and add your bookmarks page to as a "live" bookmark. Nice stuff. Get a del.icio.us account if you don't have one. The live bookmark appears as a drop down menu of bookmarks that refreshes based on your bookmarks at del.icio.us using RSS. Really cool. Now, right-click the file menu toolbar and choose customize. Drag all of your navigation buttons and the address location/address bar to the file menu. Nice space saver.

Go to "http://about:config" and scroll down to "browser.cache.memory.capacity" and set the RAM limit you'd like. I went for the 32768 setting suggested. Just sounds about right. Here's a link the the article I am stealing this from ->
Firefox Tweak Guide. Most in the article is not useful to me, but there are some useful tips in there.

Using
Tor at work? Change your torrc file to include "fascistfirewall 1" Now your traffic will start using the standard http and https ports and not grab so much attention, besides the fact that those might be the only open ports from the inside. After all, those who admin firewalls are fascists. Shhh! Don't tell my fascist co-workers I called them fascists!
