Identi.ca Version of BeTwittered
July 24, 2008 – 6:34 pmWith all of the pain of the Twitter service outages and “brown outs,” people are searching for alternatives. A VERY promising alternative is identi.ca. Identi.ca is working toward API compatibility with Twitter. This doesn’t mean much to most people directly. It means a lot to Twitter client application developers, though. I decided to make a copy of BeTwittered that connects directly to identi.ca instead of Twitter. It took all of 5 minutes to make the basic changes required. This is NOT a trivial statement. There is some debugging and clean up to do so that my code doesn’t contain twitter references, but the damned thing just worked! So, indirectly this affects all twitter users. All of those nice little Twitter apps can be very quickly adapted and work on identi.ca. The importance of this goes one step further than might be readily apparent. Identi.ca is an intentionally open system in the sense that anyone can completely copy it and set up shop on the internet, and then connect to identi.ca. Open is good. Among other things, this means redundancy and less outage issues, no vendor lock in because they are compatible, and connections among systems so that your friends dont have to chase you from one vendor to the next if you find one you like better. (think about AIM vs MSN Messenger, vs Google Talk vs Jabber vs Yahoo messenger OR Facebook vs Orkut vs LinkedIn vs Myspace … you get the idea) My rant is done for now. I have to help make dinner!
UPDATE: BETA VERSION is now available on iGoogle at this link. The screenshot is still for a twitter gadget, and there are two useless tabs (favorites and directs) that I’ve just not taken out, but the gadget is working.

Sounds awesome, any plans to integrate the Twitter and Identi.ca apps together?
By NeonPaul on Jul 25, 2008
Hi NeonPaul,
Yes, I’m planning on integration so that both services are accessible. The “how” is the only thing I think worth considering, not “if.” Maybe a new gadget that does either/both, but something will appear.
Evan of Identi.ca pointed out to me that I did not link to the new test version. I went to the google directory and they have still not OK’d the new version yet, so it’s not search-able yet.
For anyone wishing to add the new BeTwittered-Identi.ca gadget now, here are some instructions:
1) click “Add Stuff” on your iGoogle page.
2) click “Add feed or gadget” on the bottom left.
3) paste in the gadget address -> http://hosting.gmodules.com/ig/gadgets/file/106092714974714025177/IdenticaGadget.xml
Thanks!

Great news!
Will you consider making a widget with the UWA (http://dev.netvibes.com/), so that it will work on not only iGoogle, but also on Netvibes (which still lackes a Identi.ca widget) and a whole lot more webistes and even software (Windows Vista, Apple Dashboard, Opera)? That would be very nice!

Hi børge,
I am looking at the UWA specification. The bad news is that tt looks like it would require a complete rewrite if BeTwittered to make it work due to limitations it imposes on gadgets. The good news is that the new work I’m doing might make this possible anyway. Thanks for the suggestion, and I’ll keep it in mind as I move ahead.
Thanks,
Robert

Robert, thanks so much for working on the Identi.ca version. You rock! I’m excited about seeing where Identi.ca goes.

Hi Marina,
Thanks! I feel the same way about Identi.ca. I’m really interested to see what happens over time. Especially in the area of federation among systems, that could really alter the messaging landscape quite a bit.

Is anybody else having trouble seeing their main identica feed in the iGoogle BeDented window? I can see replies, but nothing else.

Hi Bill,
It’s not just you. I think you are probably experiencing a bug I introduced and fixed yesterday. You should be able to get back to normal by holding “ctrl” and clicking refresh. Let me know, I’ll be glad to help, and would like to figure out what else might be the problems.
thanks,
robert

Thanks. I tried that. It didn’t work. Then I tried logging off and on. Then got a network timeout.
Otherwise, I think it’s a great gadget. It’s at the top right corner of my iGoogle page.

It’s working now. Thanks.
